Needed Water
Friday, March 18 - Headed South, to the Ocean, below Houston. Driving. Driving. Driving. The destination was La Porte, TX (sounded French and it promised beach). As with all trips in Texas, it wasn’t quite what it seemed. It always takes longer than GPS promises, and the travel marketing never quite delivers on the promise.
I stayed at the local Hampton Inn. Drove around until my eyes dried out looking for dinner. Eventually finding a small and rather sweet downtown in La Porte. I ate Cajun tacos.
Saturday my goal was to walk a beach and then head to San Antonio Museum of Art for a late afternoon walk-thru. The timing just didn’t work out. I drove around Texas City, a very sweet small town and Galveston. The beaches in Galveston were real….but mobbed for Spring break.
I drove the five-mile Texas City Dike in Texas City and stopped by the Moore Memorial Library, which is one of the best libraries I’ve seen in Texas — modern, well-laid-out, well-positioned in the middle of town, and on a city park. The interiors are truly pleasing. The building has glass on all sides with great seating. One can relax, read and enjoy a view from a few different angles. It made me want to linger.
I also visited the Central library in Galveston and the Bryan Museum.
